OrsenWellian Correction

As much as I am not currently disturbed by the trail I leave behind all over the net, I have to scare myself due to the fact that I'm spending more time trending the current situation out into the future. I wonder at all of the possibilities.

We use the network for many of our human needs, but most importantly for love, money, and knowledge. These are some pretty fundamental needs that have become the domain of the network: all of them somehow based in a trust in the network that would have been unthinkable only a few years back. I still remember the debate about whether or not shopping online would ever really take off. "People like the shopping experience too much, it's not the same online." Better yet the disbelief my parents generation has that anyone could meet their lifetime partner online.

This fundamental trust is akin to what Orson Wells capitalized on in his famous radio play, The War of the Worlds. This richly produced fiction was made that much more real by the fact that the radio told no lies. Pondering what might make for the web's version of Orwell's play makes for some interesting scenarios.

What might make for the next War of the Worlds plot?
